The Advantages of Synthetic Grass Tennis Courts

When deciding to build a tennis court, it is important to carefully consider what type of surface you are going to employ. There are certainly benefits to having natural grass, clay, or synthetic grass, and each should be considered. Frequently though, tennis court builders are deciding to use artificial grass because it simply has more advantages to offer over the others. Here are a few of the reasons why more tennis courts are being built using synthetic grass over other alternatives.

Synthetic Grass Tennis Courts

Less Maintenance

One of the more popular reasons people are choosing to use synthetic grass for their tennis courts is that it requires much less maintenance. Of course, maintenance is required for synthetic surfaces, but undoubtedly a lot less so than the alternatives. For example, artificial surfaces are a lot more resistant to wear and tear. Natural grass tennis courts, when played on for a significant amount of time, begin to develop spots on the court that get more worn out than others. This often requires that a natural grass court be shut down in order to let these worn out spots grow back, which is not the case when using synthetic grass.

Less Maintenance

Many tennis court builders in Sydney, and other places where there can be a lot of rainfall, are choosing artificial turf because it won’t get muddy or flooded. This surface is able to drain away water better and is usually playable even after bouts of heavy rain. This allows for tennis to be played more often, because tournaments or friendly play can still take place even after a rain shower. This is certainly helpful to country clubs or other tennis-related businesses, because they will be able to provide their customers with a tennis court more consistently than when using natural grass.

Gravel or clay courts are also more difficult to maintain due to rain, because it will seep through the cracks of the court and cause the gravel or clay to expand and break in certain areas of the court. Also, it is very difficult to drain a clay or concrete court after it rains because the water will form puddles, which can linger for hours and sometimes days.

Safety

Another great benefit of using synthetic grass on a tennis court is that it can be much safer than the alternatives. This is especially true when compared to gravel or clay courts, which tend to cause a lot more injuries because of the hard surface. Using artificial turf gives the players a lot more cushion when running, which prevents joint injuries from occurring. For the more aggressive players, synthetic turf will allow them to play with a little more reckless abandon because they won’t have to worry about getting cuts or abrasions when diving after balls. This aggressive style of play is what makes tennis a great sport to both play and watch. You certainly don’t want to have to think or alter your playing style because you don’t want to tear up your arms or legs when diving for hard to reach balls.
